During my studies, I learned to solve problems, endure difficulties and appreciate friends and team

Didukh Michael
Software Engineer Total Energy Trade, 2018 graduation

Now, when I working in my specialty, I constantly use the unique knowledge, which I gained while studying at the Department ATEP. In my opinion, it is a rarity in our time. In addition, it is important to note that during my studies, I learned to solve problems, to endure difficulties and to appreciate friends and team. I consider such experience and education are necessary for everyone. I am very glad to have received them.

The department ATEP gave a basic understanding about arrangement of the technological processes. This is the foundation of basics of the development, configuration and launch of any software

During the years of study at the Department ATEP, we managed to be acquainted with the world of automation. The department gave a basic understanding about arrangement of the technological processes. This is the foundation of basics of the development, configuration and launch of any software and software products. It is here that we have learned to learn what we consider the most important trigger for achieving any professional goal. This is exactly what allowed us to build a career not only in Ukraine, but also abroad: in the USA and Germany.

Now we both work in IT companies.

I, Anastasia, work as a Product Manager at the German company Verimi, where together with the team I create identification and authentication systems for the enterprise segment. Dmytro – Tech Lead development at the American company Amazon, where he actually develops cloud solutions.

Advice for the department from Dmitry is next: to give more freedom of action and space for development, especially for final years students who want to work and create their own projects. To support and to guide, because it is this collaboration that can lead to outstanding victories!

A advantage plus is the teachers who work in the field they teach

Lukomsky Yaroslav
PHP + Node.js developer, 2018 graduation

I graduated the department ATEP 2 years ago, when I have already worked as a programmer.

My thesis:

– here is a lot of versatile knowledge – while I working on my own project, I realized that the topic of neural networks is partly related to some of the subjects that we studied, and now I remember the theory and put it into practice

– a big plus, these are teachers who work in the field they teach – your first employer can lecture you on OOP today, and tomorrow you will work in his company on a own project

– you will have interesting opportunities: as part of the xplore New Automation Award, my team and I presented the Besanabar project in Germany

– right now I have on my board an electrical diagram of one new device on Arduino, which I created myself and the device is lying next to it on the table – awaiting improvements

The main thing is to make the most of what the department offers!

Yes, after graduation I went to work in the specialty

Ushchapovsky Andrew
2015 graduation

There is nothing more planned than what happened by accident. That is how – by chance – I got to the Department of Automation of thermal energy processes.

What I liked about the department:

  1. Training has aim a developing students’ technical skills, i.e. work with real equipment, application software.
  2. Good technical equipment of the department. It is possible to work with real equipment.
  3. Teachers of the department – engineers to the bone marrow. Many of them are involved in real projects for the development of automatic control systems. That is why students receive relevant knowledge.
  4. Teachers of the department want to teach students, not shove knowledge into their heads.

Unfortunately, the curriculum built in such a way that you meet most of the teachers of the department only in the 3rd year. But it is not the department that developed the curriculum, but the Ministry of Education. Before the 3rd year it is necessary to listen to general courses, such as physics, higher mathematics (these are the main courses from the list of general), and many incomprehensible, but for some reason necessary. But I will say at once that the situation is the same in absolutely all departments of the whole university.

But starting from the 3rd, and more from the 4th year, when you begin to actively get acquainted with the teachers of the department, you begin to admire more and more what was chosen. The theory of automatic control, programming of controllers, development of dispatching systems – this is what finally fell in love with the development of automatic control systems. And not just me. Then, when I started to take part in real projects, I got such incredible feelings when I saw that the soulless irons, the control algorithm of which I programmed, started to move, I became more and more satisfied with my work. Yes, after graduation I went to work in the specialty 🙂

And I am grateful for the case that forced me in the 3rd week of receiving documents for admission to study to go and apply to the Department of Automation of thermal energy processes of the heat department!

Thanks to my successful teachers, I have acquired technical skills (so to speak,” technical mindset “) and work that gives me pleasure

Svitlana Melnychuk
Head of the design department of the control system of Ventkontrol LLC, 2015 graduation

While studying at the Department of ATEP, every day I learned and studied a new direction for myself in the field of heat energy. Of course, training was not easy for me, because the technical specialty for a girl carries a lot of difficult definitions, appellations and work on the relevant material. Despite the difficulties, I was still able to prove that technical sciences are subject to girls! 🙂

Our teachers responsibly shared their skills, knowledge and experience to make us specialists and professionals in the field of automation and computer technology.

I am currently working on projects such as automation of ventilation and microclimate, pumping stations, smoke extraction systems and fire alarms. The skills I acquired while studying ACS (computer-aided design and drawing systems) helped me to become such a specialist. Also, for me such subjects as the Theory of automatic control and Automation of technological processes were very useful. I gained experience in programming controllers from PhoenixContact, Siemens, OBEH, Unitronics, Octagon and others.

Thanks to my successful teachers, I gained technical skills (so to speak, “technical mindset”) and a job that gives me pleasure. In the future, I plan to develop further and not stop there.

The department provides knowledge and experience that will help to enter today’s world as a specialist promising and in demand, whose skills will be interesting in Ukraine and abroad

Andriy Lobach
Co-owner of iDom

I have always been attracted to the idea to teach (program) SOMETHING and then it will independently carry out the intended. I first put this idea into practice while creating a computer program in school. But the engineering idea came to fruition only when a professional programmable controller, according to my algorithm, began to control real physical objects, devices and mechanisms. At one time, it happened at the department of ATEP. The information field of the department, first of all teachers, allows looking more completely and variously at the world of automation and programming.

An indisputable advantage of the department is the availability of equipped laboratories and the opportunity to learn in practice how automation works, and to understand “what is a control system and what it is eaten with.”

The department provides knowledge and experience that will help to enter today’s world as a specialist promising and in demand, whose skills will be interesting in Ukraine and abroad.

The most interesting and progressive has always been at the intersection of sciences. Especially if the result has a practical application. The combination of automatic control and computer technology is just that.

After graduating and gaining practical experience, together with like-minded people, I founded my own company specializing in system integration, automatic control of technological processes and the introduction of innovative technologies in the management of your own home.

For example, at one time, in 2007, we were one of the 3 companies in the world that implemented the idea of controlling the “Smart Home” from a computer interface based on the then modern Windows Vista Media Center using the usual TV remote control, looking at its screen (iMC software).

Already in 2008, our software worked on the then revolutionary Apple iPhone smartphone.

And in 2010 the iMC software was launched as a widget on SmartTV and did not need anything but a TV and its remote control.

Each time we demonstrated these iconic innovations at SMART House exhibitions where they were of great interest among end users and integrators, foreign ideasniffers. Other companies are now developing iMC product ideas in their own products.

The department spun my brains and made them work 100 times more productive

Valery Schmidt

The department unleashed my brains and made them work 100 times more productive. It has given a start in life and no matter in what domain. The main thing is that I have become a completely different person.

The basics of automation, received at the department, allowed me to convert the company from an installer to a manufacturer of controller equipment and SCADA-systems.

Prosyanikov Vadim
Co-founder and President of the company "Raut-automatic", 1994 graduation

I graduated from the department in 1994.

The idea of automatic control of a technological process without human intervention is the component that determined my choice of specialty. I acted like many others under the beautiful words – automation. However, I never regretted it. And this is the great merit of the teachers of the department – Kovrigo, Chuiko, Mysak, Kiselev, Paizansky, Movchan, Batyuk, Samsonov, etc.

What the department gave me?

There are two points. In the specialty, this is a clear understanding that a real automation specialist must know the process that automates not worse, but better than a technologist. Because a true automation engineer is not someone, who draws circuits and pulls shoelaces. This engineer must be able to understand the technological process, transfer it to special subjects and be able to develop correctly approaches to automation.

Moreover, the second is in life. Technology, business process and people management have a lot in common. It was very easy for me to master new facets of my work, as the deputy head of the heat supply department at the Kiev plant “Khimvolokno”, then as the chief engineer of several private companies, then as the technical director of our company and finally as its President. The basics of automation, received at the department, allowed me to convert the company from an installer to a manufacturer of controller equipment and SCADA-systems.

The department is developing. Recently, a lot of emphasis placed on automation tools, programming and networks. Our students receive a very diverse education.

For example, my son, who graduated from our department, besides having excellent knowledge of basic subjects, is very well versed in modern automation tools. This knowledge and deep understanding of the tasks gave him the opportunity for a year already to develop a new multifunctional platform for programming controllers of our production, to create projects of automation systems based on this platform.

The only wish is to continue studying automation objects at the department. This will provide an opportunity to train versatile specialists in our field.

That is why I advise future students to pay attention to our department and our specialty.

You ask, what did the department give? I will answer – it taught me how to learn and set me on the right path, it helped me find my place in life. Isn’t that what we’re all looking for?

Oksana Simchuk
Head of Automation Systems Development Group, Eknis-Ukraine

In the life of every person there comes a moment when you have to choose. It does not matter, whether it is cheese in a store or an educational institution, what matters is that you have to make a decision. From childhood we define our skills, pulls us towards art or science, knitting or playing football, to each his own. And depending on what is interesting, we need to make a decision. The decision is difficult and you need to weigh the pros and cons, choose exactly what you want, and not your aunt – uncle – brother – matchmaker wants. Since my school years I loved exact sciences, history and literature did not arouse interest, so I decided to enter a technical university. At school there were pre-university training courses for entry into the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, I signed up for them. To say that it was difficult to say nothing, because such a heightened schedule, a bunch of tasks and tests will make anyone feel tension. But what’s next? What to choose? Before my eyes there were many faculties, departments, letters, numbers … It is difficult to understand all this, but it is possible. I have chosen several faculties, among them TEF and FIOT.

And I entered! At TEF, he was a first priority. Happiness knew no bounds. And now the long-awaited moment of choosing a specialization. Again this choice, we must decide, but such is life and it forces us to make decisions whether they are correct or not. I was very fond of computers, it was easy for me and I chosed the specialty “Computer-integrated technological processes and production” at the Department of ATEP. At the time, I had no idea what that meant, but the name was attractive. And what is behind this clever and encrypted phrase? For a person on the street, this is a collection of words, but this is not at all the case, later everything will become clear.

From the first years of study it was not easy, since I am a responsible person, I do not skip classes, I do everything on time. There are many activities, everything is varied, interesting and informative, and each subject carries something different and new. Nevertheless, in the first years of almost all specialties, classes are similar and it was difficult to understand how one specialty differs from another.

The most interesting thing started on the 4th course. Then almost all subjects were in the specialty and I began to understand who I am and where I should go. Everyone found for himself what he was interested in. The subject that won me over is “SCADA”, in simple words, data acquisition and process control systems. Then we studied several more types of the same systems and I realized that I liked this and I would like to do this. The coolest thing after graduating from the department is that no matter what object to automate, we can do everything. The most important thing is that we understand how to do it correctly, because the entire base obtained will be useful in the future.

In my 6th year at the institute, I was actively looking for work. It was hard to find, almost impossible, especially for a girl. But, without giving up, I sent my resume to all technical companies in a row, maybe I’ll be lucky. And lucky! They called me back, invited me to one interview, the second, and finally hired me. Here, I am an employee of Eknis-Ukraine, but for some reason no one trusts me anything, and the management does not believe at all that a female can be a techie.

Taking my willpower into a fist, using all my best qualities and working overwhelmingly, I proved that women techies exist and they are no worse than men are! The management recognized that not only men are smart, but women very often have qualities that men are not available. These are perseverance, attentiveness and endurance.

Now I have been working here for more than 5 years, I am the head of the automation systems development group. I have two people subordinate to me and they are both female. We are engaged in the development and implementation of automation systems. Now we are engaged in automated dispatch control systems and substation automation. Current projects now include the automated process control system EGOK “GPP-7” in Komsomolsk, automation of GIS-330kV CHPP-5 in Kiev, dispatching of Mezhevsky Distribution Zone in the Dnipropetrovsk region. The main task of our group is to create a high-quality interface for the dispatching system for operating personnel and ensure the stability of its work. Based on the results of 5 years of work, we have developed dispatching systems for almost the entire Dnipropetrovsk region, taking into account two central dispatch points, many high-voltage substations in Kiev and other facilities throughout Ukraine.

And most importantly, it doesn’t matter who you will be after graduation: a designer, adjuster, installer or SCADA developer, the main thing is that you like it. The main thing is to believe that everything will work out and make every effort.

But you ask, what did the department give? I will answer – it taught me how to learn and set me on the right path, it helped me find my place in life. Isn’t that what we’re all looking for?

Electronics, programming, IT technologies? Yes, where today without it! All this knowledge (and not only this) can to obtain by studying at the Department of ATEP

Shpak Oleg
Leading Engineer of the Department for Coordination of ACS of TP Power Plants and SARCHP NEC "Ukrenergo", 1988 graduation

Hello, dear friends!

My friend from the time of studying at KPI offered to provide feedback on the department of ATEP, where I studied from 1982 to 1988, and for another two years, I worked at this department as an engineer. This request and my consent gave me a reason to find out and answer a very general and very personal question – “What gave me training at KPI at the Department of Automation of Heat and Power Processes?”

The answer was quite simple. Almost eight years of studying and working at the department have been a good school of life. And I got a lot in this school. In my case, simple and specific things are hidden behind the banal-general phrase. They cannot be to range in order of importance and cannot to write “First, second.” My wife and I studied in the same group. My institute friends and friends are still with me today. We communicate and, if necessary, help each other. Strict life skills in the team and as a leader, and as a subordinate, and as a partner – have become and are useful every day.

Of course, this is not the purpose of any KPI department. The task of the department is to educate a specialist, engineer, technical manager. I can confidently say that at the request of a spudey (student) (not even one hundred percent!) ATEP department will release a high-class specialist – heatpower and more! The principles of operation and design of the main (and auxiliary) heating equipment allow you quickly to navigate in almost all technological processes. If “it” is not heated / cooled, then “it” must rotate or flow. Or all together! And if you know where and how to measure and record it – then more than half the work is done. Classical knowledge of the theory of automatic control of technological processes, measurements, modeling make it possible to understand the behavior of complex (and not very complex units!), from the valve in the bath to the powerful power unit of a nuclear power plant. Sometimes, for a person who wants to be an engineer, this comes in handy. Electronics, programming, IT – technology? Yes, where today without it! All this knowledge (and not only this) can to obtain by studying at the Department of ATEP. I know for sure, because I got them there myself. I can’t say that I studied everything. But what the department gave me, professionally, allowed me to build and set up factories and shops, give people in the house heat, water and light, feel confident in the units of thermal power plants and nuclear power plants and not attract outsiders (hello, plumber!) for repairing a float water level regulator in an important part of your home.

Even if you do not become a star of automation, the years of study at the Department of ATEP will still be the best in your life.
