History

The Department of Automation of Energy Processes was established in 1958 as Ukraine’s first department specialising in industrial automation. Its development reflects changing control-engineering tools, from process measurement and modelling to computer-based and networked automation.

Research schools

  • From 1958: Professor Valentin Kocho developed a school in measurement and automation of technological processes. His research addressed industrial heat and mass transfer, combustion, steelmaking processes and measurement and control of high-temperature operations.
  • From 1980: Professors Vitaliy Azhogin and Yuriy Zaichenko advanced modelling and optimisation of technological-process control systems.
  • From 1991: Professor Yuriy Kovryho led work on modern computer technologies in energy and computer-integrated control.

Later work documented by the department includes industrial control systems, simulation and training tools, process automation, and integration of computing with industrial communications.
