His dissertation, “Predictive Diagnostics of Rotating Energy Equipment Based on Neural Network Analysis of Vibration Signals,” was supervised by Taras Bahan, Candidate of Technical Sciences and Associate Professor at the department.

From Vibration Signals to Condition Diagnosis

Electric motor faults can lead to unplanned downtime and repair costs. The research explores how vibration signals can reveal a motor’s technical condition and help assess degradation, supporting timely maintenance decisions.

The study combines spectrogram analysis with neural-network methods that capture signal patterns and their evolution over time. The model was tested on experimental datasets covering several motor conditions, including rotor imbalance, shaft misalignment, bearing defects and broken rotor bars. An interactive diagnostic dashboard was also developed to present the results.

This approach supports condition-based maintenance by giving engineers additional evidence for evaluating faults and planning repairs.

The 9th International Conference on Contemporary Problems of Thermal Engineering, CPOTE 2026, took place in Poland on 23–25 September 2026. AEP professor Volodymyr Voloshchuk presented the paper Exergy-based diagnosis of malfunctioning components in heat pump at off-design conditions in a parallel session.

Finding the source of efficiency losses

As a heat pump operates, its electricity consumption may rise. Under changing operating conditions, however, it can be difficult to identify which component is responsible. The researchers used advanced exergy analysis to isolate the effect of an individual component from its interactions with the rest of the system.

A case study of a building-heating heat pump showed that evaporator-surface fouling had the greatest impact on the loss of energy efficiency. For the system studied, the authors calculated that cleaning the evaporator and condenser heat exchangers before the heating season could reduce electricity consumption by 3–8% over the heating season.

The research was carried out within the project “Decarbonisation of the construction sector and energy supply systems using digital twin technology” (state registration No. 0125U001437).

Part of the equipment will be used for the development of robotics at the department, in particular industrial motors with encoders, servo converters, frequency converter, etc.

A large number of existing training stands with registrators will be updated with advanced HMI operator panels. The core of the information and measurement systems laboratory will be the Modicon M262 PLC.
